How to repair leaking roof without re-roofing the whole house?

Our roof is leaking and I’m sure we need a new roof, wood and all, that is, but we don’t have ,000 or more for a new roof. I was wondering if there is anything we could do to patch it to where it stops leaking?

Finding leaks on a bad roof is difficult. The place it appears may not be where it is leaking. Leaking does usually appear first at corners and valleys where flashing is present and on the side where the sun shines most (south side in the northern hemisphere.)
Temporary repairs might be made with tube of tar in a caulking gun, roof cement (patch, repair…) which is basically tar in a can, and/or using a tarp to cover the area. All have their drawbacks and working on a roof if you are not completely comfortable with the process and procedure can be a larger economic setback than a new roof.
